Riga, May 28 (LETA) - Politicians running for the Jelgava regional council hope for more political stability in the next term, but are not sure about it, according to answers given by candidates to LETA.

Mairita Paulina, the leader of the Latvian Green Party ticket, reminded that 11 parties are running in Jelgava municipality in the 2025 municipal elections.

"Given the diversity of these political forces, the formation of a stable coalition will depend on the election results and the parties' ability to agree on common priorities," Paulina believes.

National Alliance candidate Oskars Cirulis is convinced that there must be a coalition, otherwise Jelgava region will stagnate.

Ingus Zalitis, deputy executive director of the municipality and leader of the Union of Greens and Farmers ticket, thinks that a stable coalition can be formed after the elections, as all disagreements are currently based on a lack of communication in the political environment.

"At the moment there is a very tense situation in Jelgava regional council, where there is no constructive work, because the current council understands that it is probably the last months in power," Zalitis is convinced.

Madars Lasmanis, MP, former chairman of the council and leader of For Latvia's Development ticket in the municipality, assessed that the participation of 11 parties in the elections means that society is fragmented. Therefore, it is important how many deputies will be re-elected from the current composition, because the problem is to cooperate with these people.

"I want to believe that the next council will be more stable than the current one," Lasmanis said.

Irina Dolgova, the leader of the Harmony ticket and deputy chairwoman of the council, also pointed out that already today in the Jelgava regional council there are different opinions on different issues, expressed by different combinations of political forces, which clearly indicates the diversity of visions and democratic tendencies among politicians.

"A coalition will definitely be formed after the elections, but we do not assume the adjective "stable" for this formation. A significant factor threatening stability in a potential coalition is the tight financial situation in the municipality, which would prevent free implementation of the electoral programs of any political force," Dolgova said.
