RIGA, Nov 1 (LETA) - Utilitas Wind, the owner of the Targale wind farm in western Latvia, has invested EUR 7 million in a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the wind farm, LETA was told at the company. 

On Friday, Utilitas Wind opened inaugurated the large-scale battery energy storage system with a total capacity of 10 megawatts (MW) and storage capacity of 20 megawatt hours (MWh) in the Ventspils municipality.

This fall, the BESS of the Targale wind farm will be connected to the Latvian power transmission system. 

Utilitas Wind board member Renars Urbanovics indicated that the project has been two years in the making.

The BESS will provide energy storage to transfer the generated electricity to users when there is a shortage in the electricity system. The battery system includes six batteries, three inverter/transformers and one distribution point container, providing a total electricity  storage capacity of up to 20 MWh.

The project was financed by OP Corporate Bank.

According to Firmas.lv, Utilitas Wind will be registered in 2022 and the company's share capital is EUR 3 million. The company is owned by Estonia's Utilitas Wind. The company had a turnover of EUR 681,855 and a loss of EUR 87,062 between July 7, 2022 and December 31, 2023.
