Ukrainian refugees in Jekabpils might be moved from dorms as school year starts
RIGA, Aug 9 (LETA) - Ukrainian refugees currently accommodated in school dormitories in Latvia's eastern city of Jekabpils might have to be moved elsewhere in the fall as the dorms will be needed for students as the new school year starts, says Jekabpils regional mayor Raivis Ragainis (Latvian Green Party).
At present, the local government's capacity to accommodate refugees has been exhausted, but some Ukrainians leave and some arrive to take their place from time to time, the mayor said.
"The school year is nearing, and the school dormitories that we offered to the Ukrainians might be needed for students who use the dorm service," said Ragainis.
The Jekabpils government will consider relocating the Ukrainians to other municipal buildings like the boarding school, the mayor said. In Ragainis' words, there are currently around 500 Ukrainian refugees living in the municipality's territory, with 170 of them residing in municipal buildings.
