Several kindergartens and schools in the capital will have to close - Riga mayor

RIGA, Feb 4 (LETA) - Due to changes in the number of pupils, several preschools and schools in Riga will have to close, Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives) said in an interview on Latvian Television this morning.

The mayor did not name the specific educational institutions that will be closed, saying that the main outlines of the changes will be known by the end of the week, but the decision could be made within two weeks.

Kleinbergs said that there are neighborhoods in Riga where there is a shortage of places in kindergartens, but elsewhere, where they are only 50 percent to 60 percent full.

The politician promised that if an educational institution is closed and a child has to change schools, the conditions at the new institution will be the same or better than at the one being closed.
