Authorities ready to close eastern border immediately if necessary - Saeima committee

RIGA, Sept 15 (LETA) - Latvian authorities are ready to close the country's eastern border immediately if necessary, officials told the Saeima National Security Committee on Monday.

At the same time, the committee concluded that there is no need to close the eastern border at the moment, the Saeima press office told LETA.

The Saeima National Security Committee examined the National Alliance's proposal to close Latvia's borders with Russia and Belarus during the Zapad military exercises. Taking into account the information provided by the responsible services, the Saeima committee decided not to forward the proposal to the Saeima for further consideration.

The committee notes that this issue has also been discussed at the National Security Council, which has already instructed the Cabinet of Ministers, together with the responsible services, to assess restrictions on crossing Latvia's eastern border.

The Saeima committee agrees with the National Security Council's position and stresses that when it comes to the security of its eastern border, Latvia's actions must be resolute and coordinated with the closes allies - Lithuania and Estonia.

The security situation on the country's eastern border is one of the National Security Committee's priorities, and the committee will continue to closely monitor developments in this area within the framework of its parliamentary control, the Saeima press office informs.

As reported, at its last week's sitting, the Saeima forwarded to the National Security Committee the National Alliance's proposal to close Latvia's eastern border. Edmunds Jurevics, chair of the New Unity faction in the Saeima, told lawmakers before the vote that the National Armed Forces (NAF) are taking care of national security and called on others to have trust in the army.
