Harmony first to register candidates for elections in Rezekne Region; no candidates registered in Varaklani as yet
RIGA, July 22 (LETA) - Harmony on Thursday became the first political party to register its candidates for the upcoming local elections in Rezekne Region, the regional election commission's chairperson Ilona Turka told LETA.
She said that the the election commission accepted the list of 21 Harmony candidates running in the local elections. It is not clear when other political parties are going to register their candidates.
Meanwhile, no political party has registered candidates for local elections in Varaklani Region, said the regional election commission's chairperson Aija Scucka.
July 28 is the deadline for parties to register their candidates for the September 11 elections in Varaklani and Rezekne Region.
As reported, in compliance with the Constitutional Court's ruling according to which the planned merger of Varaklani Region with Rezekne Region was not in line with the Latvian Constitution, the Saeima on June 1 passed amendments to the Law on Administrative Territories and Populated Areas, separating the two regions and calling municipal elections in there on September 11, 2021.
In all other municipalities of Latvia, except Riga, the 2021 local elections took place on June 5.
