Search for second crashed drone to resume today
RIGA, May 8 (LETA) - The search for the second drone that flew into Latvian airspace from Russia in the early hours of Thursday and crashed will resume today in Latgale, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) told Latvian Television (LTV) on Friday.
On Thursday evening, the National Armed Forces (NAF) announced that they had suspended the search for the second drone that crashed in Latgale, but at the same time, they believe that the drone is still explosive.
Kozlovskis told LTV in a telephone interview on Friday morning that the search for the second drone would resume today. The search is likely to involve a redeployment of personnel and a change in tactics, taking into account an analysis of the drone's possible flight path and the location of the crash.
Experience has shown that local residents can be the first to find a drone, so it would is very important for people not to approach such an object, but to report the find immediately to the emergency services by calling 112.
Kozlovskis added that information provided by residents on the activities of drones entering Latvian airspace has been very useful to the services. For example, on Thursday, one of the drones that reached Rezekne and then flew toward the border could actually be traced by the eyewitnesses' calls, the minister said.
As reported, in the early hours of Thursday, several drones flew into Latvian airspace from Russia, at least one of which crashed in Rezekne, damaging an oil storage facility. It is believed that another drone may have fallen in a more remote location, while another drone left Latvian airspace.
People in the vicinity of Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne received cell broadcast alerts on their mobile phones, warning them of a threat in airspace.
NAF notes that as long as Russian aggression in Ukraine is ongoing, there is a possibility of recurrence of cases of foreign drones entering or approaching Latvian airspace.
