Municipal reform is opportunity that should be used wisely - Pless
RIGA, Aug 20 (LETA) - The administrative territorial reform is an opportunity that should be used wisely, said Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Arturs Toms Pless (For Development) at the congress of the Latvian Association of Local Governments today.
"Latvia has stepped into a new development stage. The municipal reform that came into force on July 1 is not only a turning point in Latvia's history, but a realistic opportunity to transform and improve the state and municipal administration in a wise, sustainable and contemporary way," the minister said.
The reform will serve as a platform for the future reforms in other sectors, including in education, health care, transport and others.
Pless said that the reform will provide significant benefits and ensure more balanced regional development, reducing the inequality gap between Riga and the rest of Latvia, at the same time, strengthening cooperation among regions and cities.
As reported, the 31st congress of the Latvian Association of Local Governments (LPS) takes place today to elect the board, the chairman of the board and deputies. The congress will focus on the work of local governments after the Administrative Territorial Reform.
