Jurmala's capacity to admit Ukrainian refugees nearly exhausted

RIGA, March 31 (LETA) - Jurmala's capacity to admit refugees from Ukraine has been nearly exhausted, the local government informed.

By March 30, Jurmala has received 624 Ukrainian refugees, which is the second largest number of refugees after Riga, and this number of growing, Jurmala representatives said.

There are few spaces left in accommodation establishments, and also staff of municipal institutions working with refugees has been overburdened.

The local council calls on residents of Jurmala to transport refugees to the city only if they already have a place to stay. Assistance to refugees from Ukraine should be provided in coordination with the State Border Guard.

"We have been providing assistance to Ukrainian war refugees since the start of the war. Jurmala has donated money to help Ukraine and is helping Ukrainians who have arrived in the city. We have established a refugee center, we are coordinating job opportunities in Jurmala, organizing places at schools, we have opened a creative space for Ukrainian children at Jurmala Music Secondary School," said Jurmala Mayor Gatis Truksnis (Greens/Farmers).

The flow of refugee is growing.

Truksnis said that the municipality's capacity is not limitless. Jurmala schools and preschools have admitted 70 children from Ukraine. There are no more spots in preschools, but schools may admit another 100 children.
