Adazi local government still fails to agree on coalition and next mayor
Riga, March 25 (LETA) - The lawmakers of the Adazi regional council have still not managed to agree on a possible coalition and the next mayor, Gatis Miglans (Greens/farmers), the deputy chairman of the council who is acting as the mayor, told LETA.
He had earlier expressed hope that by the next council meeting, scheduled for Thursday, they would try to reach such an agreement, but this has not been possible.
Several models of cooperation and distribution of responsibilities have been considered, but none has been able to satisfy all members.
Negotiations will continue next week, Miglans said.
As reported, former chairwoman of the municipal council, Karina Mikelsone (Latvia's Association of Regions), decided to step down after the draft municipal budget did not receive support in the finance committee. She resigned in early January.
As a result, Adazi regional council has been without a chairperson for more than two months.
LETA has learned that the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development is monitoring the situation in Adazi municipality.
The procedure enshrined in the Law on Local Government provides for the right of the Saeima to dissolve the council if one of the preconditions occurs, in this case, if the local council has not elected a chairperson, deputy chairperson or committees within two months.
