Local government has no objections to construction of women's prison in Cesis
RIGA, Sept 22 (LETA) - The local government of Cesis Municipality is informed about the Prison Administration's tentative plan to build a women's prison in Cesis and has no objections to the idea, municipal spokesman Aleksandrs Abramovs told LETA.
The local government has information that the women's prison is being planned at the Cesis Correctional Institution for Juveniles, a facility with many unused premises.
The spokesman indicated that the opening of the women's prison in Cesis would create new jobs for the city's residents and thereby benefit the municipality.
Earlier, the Prison Administration's head Dmitrijs Kalins said in an interview to TV3 channel that a possible construction of a new prison for women inmates is being considered in Cesis.
The complex of the juvenile detention facility in Cesis, is being considered as one of the options for the new women's prison. Discussions are still ongoing, so the final plan is not yet entirely clear, Kalins added.
He said that building new infrastructure for women inmates is one of the Prison Administration's main priorities for the next period. A memorandum on this idea is planned to be signed with representatives of the Norway Grants program in October.
