RIGA, April 7 (LETA) - The number of deaths in the first 11 weeks of the year in Latvia has increased by 31.9 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

In the first 11 weeks of 2021, i.e. in the period from January 4 to March 21, a total of 7,828 deaths were registered in Latvia, while in the first 11 weeks of 2020, 5,934 deaths were registered in Latvia.

Data released by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) show that 1,146 people infected with Covid-19 died in the first 11 weeks of the year. This is 14.6 percent of all those who died during this period. In the first week of this year the share of Covid-19 related deaths was 20.2 percent, in the second week - 15.8 percent, in the third week - 16.9 percent, in the fourth week - 10.8 percent, in fifth week - 19.1 percent, in the sixth week - 16.1 percent, in the seventh week - 13.4 percent, in the eighth week - 11.5 percent, in the ninth week - 13 percent, in the 10th week - 11.9 percent, and in the 11th week - 9.5 percent.

Among them, 4,151 women died in the first 11 weeks of this year, which is 29.4 percent more than in the first 11 weeks last year, and 3,677 men, which is an increase of 34.9 percent.

According to the data, 2,335 of the deaths were registered in the Riga region, up 28.4 percent from a year ago, followed by Latgale region with 1,400 deaths, growing 44.3 percent, Pieriga region with 1,226 deaths, up 26.8 percent, Zemgale region with 995 deaths, up 34.6 percent, Kurzeme region with 992 deaths, growing 27.7 percent, and Vidzeme region with 846 deaths, up 32.6 percent.
