Border Guard does not foresee increase in migration pressure in near future due to Middle East conflict

Riga, March 16 (LETA) - The State Border Guard does not expect an increase in migration pressure on Latvia in the near future due to the Middle East conflict.

As the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujats, said in an interview on commercial TV3 television, he does not foresee a direct impact of this situation in the near future, as air traffic is limited. "We are not so close to the land border that people can come to us on foot," Pujats said.

At the same time, all hostilities are a contributing factor to migration, he stressed, concluding that the situation could change with the resumption of air traffic.

As reported, Israel and the US launched a war against Iran on February 28, while Iran retaliated with strikes against Israel and Gulf countries with US military facilities, including the United Arab Emirates. The conflict has also led to widespread restrictions on air traffic.
