CVK extends vote counting until Sunday afternoon

Riga, June 8 (LETA) - In order to ensure the completion of the compilation of the results of the local elections, the Central Election Commission (CVK) has decided to extend the counting of votes until 4 p.m. today, Andrejs Vaivars, the CVK spokesperson, told LETA.

At the moment, the votes cast for the parties have been counted and the number of seats won by the parties is known, but the commissions still have some work to do, counting plus and minus marks. To avoid errors, it has been decided to extend the data processing time, Vaivars explained.

In the middle of the night, while struggling with technical difficulties in counting the votes, the CVK decided that all votes in the local elections should be counted by 1 p.m. on Sunday.

As reported, President Edgars Rinkevics said earlier that the CVK and the State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) had failed in organizing local elections. In his opinion, the Saeima and the government should evaluate the work of these institutions and the responsibility of their officials.

The politician believes that there must be concrete solutions to ensure that next year's parliamentary elections run smoothly and without incidents.

Smart Administration and Regional Development Director Inga Berzina (New Unity) said that the State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) director Jorens Liops should take full responsibility for the problems in organizing the elections.

Berzina stressed on social media that the elections have taken place and the most important thing now is to finish the counting, but she believes that the director of the VDAA should take full responsibility for what happened.

As reported, the counting of votes in the 2025 municipal elections faced technical problems on Saturday and overnight on Sunday. Polling stations also faced technical problems during the week of advance voting.
