Large rescue forces involved in tracking down source of unidentified smell in Riga
RIGA, April 15 (LETA) - Large rescue sources were involved in tracking down the source of an unidentified smell spreading in the area of Krustpils Street in Riga on Monday, LETA was told at the State Fire and Rescue Service.
Shortly after 3 p.m., rescuers were called to Krustpils Street in Riga where an odor of an unidentified substance could be felt in the air. The nearby building of a manufacturing company was evacuated due to the strong stench.
To determine the degree of concentration and hazardous nature of the odorous substance, the National Armed Forces' (NAF) unit for the protection against weapons of mass destruction was deployed and took sewage water samples to send them for laboratory tests. An operational headquarters was set up at the scene, which included representatives from the State Fire Service, the Riga Civil Protection Administration, Rigas Udens municipal water utility, the NAF, the State Police and the Municipal Police.
In the evening, measurements showed that there was no increased danger to the population or the environment. The relevant services carried out the ventilation and flushing of the sewage wells.
The source of the smell still remains unidentified, but the investigation is ongoing.
