Largest number of children abandoned in baby-boxes registered in Riga and Madona past 15 years
RIGA, Nov 2 (LETA) - During the past 15 years of the baby-box project, 33 children have been abandoned in Riga, while in Madona - seven, Laura Zvirbule and Edite Kanepaja-Vanaga, representatives of the Latvian Children's Fund (LCF) and project managers of the baby-box project, informed LETA.
Five children were left in Jelgava.
In Liepaja, the total number of abandoned children in the same period is four, while in Daugavpils and Ventspils - three each.
At the same time, four children were abandoned in Rezekne and two in Valmiera.
A total of 32 girls and 29 boys have been abandoned in 15 years, according to data collected by the project.
The highest number of abandonments was in 2012, when a total of nine children were taken to abandoned in the special baby-boxes.
61 newborns have been left in baby-boxes in 15 years.
