RIGA, July 9 (LETA) - The accident in which a blade of a wind turbine broke off and fell to ground at the Rapsoil wind farm construction site will be investigated by the international turbine manufacturer Nordex, Rapsoil spokesman Paulius Ugianskis told LETA.

He noted that Rapsoil is the owner of the wind farm project, while the turbine manufacturer, supplier, and installer is the international company Nordex. Given that the turbines have not yet been handed over to the project owner, Nordex will conduct an investigation into the causes of the accident.

The investigation will determine the exact circumstances of the accident and its root cause.

According to Ugianskis, the accident involving one of the recently installed Nordex wind turbines in Liepaja occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

He said that with wind speeds reaching 20 to 22 meters per second, which is within the normal operating range for this type of turbine, one of the turbine's three blades broke off and fell onto the construction site.

No one was injured in the accident, and the area has been cordoned off.

Ugianskis said that a thorough investigation into the accident is currently underway. As a precaution, all 12 wind turbines in the project have been temporarily shut down while the investigation is ongoing.

The Rapsoil spokesman noted that these turbines had not yet been put into operation. At the time of the accident, they were being tested to verify the operation of the equipment and identify any potential technical malfunctions before the start of operations.

When asked whether the company would seek compensation from Nordex for losses caused by the accident, Ugianskis noted that any decision regarding this matter will be made after the investigation is completed and its findings have been evaluated.

Zita Lazdane, a representative of the Liepaja City Council, told LETA that the construction site has round-the-clock surveillance, so the footage will be reviewed and evaluated. She added that the damage is mechanical in nature and that all 12 wind turbines are scheduled to be inspected.

The Rapsoil wind farm is a large-scale and long-debated project in Liepaja. The construction plan calls for the installation of 12 wind turbines with a total capacity of 57.6 megawatts (MW) along November 14 Boulevard. The turbine towers are 82.5 meters tall, while the total height, including the blades, is nearly 150 meters.

According to information from Firmas.lv, Rapsoil had a turnover of EUR 30,508 last year. The company's loss amounted to EUR 527,089. The company was founded in 2002. Its share capital is EUR 35,175,246. The company is owned by Lithuania's UAB Enervia.

Nordex Group was founded in 1985, and the company's main activity is the manufacture of wind turbines with a capacity ranging from four to seven megawatts (MW). In certain markets, Nordex Group also operates as a wind farm project developer, while manufacturing takes place at plants in Germany, Spain, Brazil, the U.S., and India.
