Lithuanian military says rising airspace violations are intimidation tactic
VILNIUS, May 22 (LETA--BNS) - The Lithuanian military said on Friday that increasing airspace violations in Lithuania and other regional countries are part of intimidation tactics by hostile nations.
"The physical security situation beyond our borders remains unchanged, with Russian land forces tied down in Ukraine, but the tactics of intimidating and dividing neighbouring states have not disappeared," the military said on Thursday, deliberately using a lowercase letter for Russia in its statement.
The military emphasised that "there is no need to pack any suitcases," noting that such incidents are a daily reality for countries living alongside a war zone. However, it said that for Lithuania, unlike Estonia, Latvia, Poland, or Romania, these are still the first warnings of this nature.
The statement follows an air alert issued for more than an hour in the Utena district on Thursday due to two suspected drones entering Lithuanian airspace.
An air alert was also declared on Wednesday, while on Sunday a suspected Ukrainian drone carrying explosives crashed in the Utena district.
Similar incidents have recently been recorded in other Baltic states and Finland.
