Stepanenko's Sovereign Power to run for local elections, including in Riga

Riga, Jan 15 (LETA) - The party Sovereign Power, which is not represented in the Saeima and municipal councils, has decided to run in this year's municipal elections, including in Riga, offering the leader of the political force, former MP Julija Stepanenko, for the post of the Riga mayor, the party informed LETA.

The priorities of the Sovereign Power in Riga will be the improvement of infrastructure, support for all groups of citizens, financial audits in municipal procurement and social integration.

Stepanenko believes that the Riga City Council has neglected economic issues, putting politics at the forefront, while the people of Riga are the victims. She promises that the Sovereign Power will take a professional approach to finding a solution to any problem once it enters the Riga City Council.

Stepanenko has been entrusted with the task of drawing up the party's list of candidates. The party plans to announce separately the nomination of candidates for elections in other Latvian municipalities.

According to LETA's archives, the Sovereign Power has been in the register of political parties since April 1, 2011, but it acquired its current name in 2022, when the party was led by the then MPs Stepanenko and Julija Svecova, who were elected from the Harmony list in the Saeima, but later became independent lawmakers, working outside the factions.

The Sovereign Power ran unsuccessfully in the 2022 elections to the 14th Saeima and last year's European Parliament elections.

According to a poll conducted by the research center SKDS for Latvian Television, 2.5 percent of voters would have been willing to vote for Sovereign Power in the Parliamentary elections last November.

Local elections will be held on June 7 this year.
