(w/ADD) Miglans is elected chairman of Adazi municipal council
(adds more information)
RIGA, May 28 (LETA) - On Thursday, the Adazi municipal council elected Gatis Miglans (Greens/Farmers) as the chairman of the council.
All 14 councilors present voted for Miglans. In total, there are 15 members of the council.
As the local government informed the LETA, Girts Dubkevics (Progressives) was elected deputy mayor at today’s council meeting by a vote of eight to five.
The other deputy mayor, Janis Vaivads (Latvia's Green Party), will also continue in his role.
"My goal is balanced development across the entire municipality so that a sense of belonging to the municipality is felt in both Adazi and Carnikava parishes, as well as in every village in the municipality," Miglans said after his election.
He considers education to be one of the biggest challenges in the mayor’s office. Nearly 3,000 pupils currently attend municipal schools. This means that the municipality must simultaneously consider the accessibility and quality of education, school infrastructure, and the recruitment of teachers, so that all children in the municipality are provided with a quality education as close to home as possible, the mayor believes.
Community involvement seems just as important to the new chairman.
"The development of Adazi municipality must take place in consultation with residents, neighborhoods, parents, business owners, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. Only then is it possible to make decisions that are understandable, well-founded, and meet the needs of the entire municipality," said Miglans.
As reported, Adazi municipal council did not have a chairperson for almost five months, since Karina Mikelsone (Latvia's Alliance of Regions) resigned as chairperson at the beginning of January.
During this time, the council was led by deputy chairman Miglans.
