Eight illegal migrants detained in Ogre Municipality after suspicious hitchhikers reported in the area
RIGA, May 26 (LETA) - Eight migrants who had illegally entered Latvia were detained in Ogre Municipality after an eyewitness reported suspicious hitchhikers in the area, the municipal police said.
The municipal police said on social media that, on Monday, they received information about suspicious hitchhikers on the Riga HPP-Jaunjelgava road in Birzgale Parish, Ogre Municipality. The caller reported that two foreigners were trying to stop passing cars in the Kegums-Jaunjelgava direction.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers met the caller and two foreign nationals. During the conversation, it was established that the foreigners were Indian nationals who had crossed the Latvian border illegally, police said. The two men were detained at the scene.
Further interviews with the detainees revealed that six other migrants were hiding in a nearby forest. They had been without food and water for several days. One of the men was also reported to have suffered a head injury, according to the municipal police.
The State Police and the Emergency Medical Service were also informed and called to the scene. With the help of State Police officers, the six migrants were found in the forest area, detained, and handed over to the State Border Guard.
