RIGA, July 23 (LETA) - In the first half of this year, a total of 20.22 million passengers were transported on regional subsidized public transportation services in Latvia, which is 140,000 passengers, or 0.7 percent fewer than during the same period last year, according to data released by the Road Transport Directorate (ATD).

Of these, 10.11 million passengers were transported on regional bus routes during the first half of this year, which is 120,000, or 1.2 percent fewer passengers than in the first half of 2025.

Meanwhile, 10.11 million passengers were transported on regional train routes in the first half of this year, which is 20,000 passengers, or 0.2 percent, fewer than during the same period last year.

Of all passengers carried on regional routes in the first half of 2026, 82.3 percent, or 16.64 million, were paying passengers; 9 percent, or 1.83 million, were members of large families; 6.5 percent, or 1.32 million, were people with disabilities; 1.1 percent, or 220,000, were preschool-aged children; 0.7 percent, or 140,000, were orphans, and 0.4 percent, or 80,000, were victims of political repression.

In the first six months of last year, subsidized regional public transportation services carried 20.36 million passengers.

LETA previously reported that subsidized regional public transportation services in Latvia carried a total of 41.78 million passengers in 2025, which is 795,930 passengers, or 2 percent more than in 2024.

Of these, 20.46 million passengers were transported on regional bus routes in 2025, which is 5 percent fewer than in 2024, while 21.32 million passengers were transported on regional train routes, an increase of 10 percent.
