Drones detected near Latvian border triggered latest overnight air alert
RIGA, May 9 (LETA) - The latest cell broadcast notification about a possible threat in Latvian airspace was sent out in the early hours of Saturday after several drones were detected flying near the Latvian border, Roberts Skraucs, a spokesman for the National Armed Forces (NAF), told LETA.
He revealed that sensors detected several flying objects, but none of them was reported to have crossed the border or crashed into Latvian territory.
Skraucs said that overnight, authorities received calls from people reporting sightings of flying drones and fires. The drones were most likely NATO fighter jets scrambled in response to the air alert, but the alleged fires had nothing to do with the drones detected at the border, the NAF spokesman said.
Residents of the Rezekne Municipality told LETA that this time they first received two drone warnings and then heard fighter jets. There was also clearer communication from the local government on social networks compared to the case on Thursday, when two drones from Russia crashed in Rezekne.
As LETA reported, a cell broadcast notification about a possible threat in Latvian airspace was sent out in the early hours of Saturday to residents in the municipalities of Rezekne, Ludza, Aluksne and Balvi, the National Armed Forces (NAF) reported.
According to an announcement on the 112.lv emergencies website, the NAF informed residents of the respective territories that there was a possible threat in Latvian airspace. Residents were urged to stay indoors, observe the two-walls principle, close windows and doors.
The NAF informed on social media that fighter jets of the NATO-led Baltic Air Policing Mission were scrambled over the emergency.
A few hours later, the air alert was called off.
Guntars Skudra (New Unity), chairman of the Rezekne municipal council, told LETA early on Saturday that the municipality received information about patrols and NATO fighter jets taking to the air.
As reported, similar cell broadcast notifications were sent out to residents Latvia's eastern region Latgale in the past few months, most likely related to drones involved in the Russia-Ukraine war approaching or entering Latvian airspace.
In the early hours of Thursday morning, several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, entered Latvian airspace from Russia. Two of them crashed in Rezekne, damaging an oil storage facility.
