Three people drown and three people rescued from waters over weekend
Riga, March 16 (LETA) - Bodies of three people were pulled from water over the weekend, including two who had fallen through the ice, while three people were rescued, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) informed LETA.
During the night on Saturday, a call was received to Zigfrida Anna Meirovics Boulevard in Riga, where a man had fallen through the ice of a canal. Firefighters rescued the man and took him to the shore, where he was handed over to the Emergency Medical Service.
On Saturday, a call was received in Madona municipality, where three people had fallen through ice on a lake. Rescuers rescued two people who were on the ice, brought them to shore and handed them over to the medics. Another person was pulled from the water and pronounced dead by medics.
Yesterday, a deceased person was pulled out of the Daugava river in Ogre municipality and handed over to the State Police.
Also on Sunday, a call was received in Adazi municipality, where a man had fallen through ice. Rescuers used a rescue board to bring the man to shore, where medics pronounced him dead.
Firefighters remind that ice on water bodies is very unsafe at the moment. As temperatures rise, the ice becomes thinner and more dangerous. It is extremely dangerous to step on the ice at this time.
