At least 1,150 sites across Latvia to be cleaned of rubbish during Big Cleanup
RIGA, April 25 (LETA) - The Big Cleanup is taking place across Latvia on Saturday, with at least 1,150 littered sites marked on the Big Cleanup map and locations chosen by individual participants to be cleaned up as part of the annual campaign, the event's organizers told LETA.
Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) is also scheduled take part in the environmental cleanup on the Grapju peninsula in Riga, her agenda shows. President Edgars Rinkevics is not planning to participate in this year's Big Cleanup, while Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) will be on a foreign trip.
A total of 123 preschools, schools, and higher education institutions, around 500 companies and thousands of individual activists are taking part in this year's Big Clean-up.
Anyone who would like to join the cleanup can take a look at the map https://talkas.lv/apstiprinatas-talkas/ and join the event. Solo cleaners are invited to mark their locations on another map and take their garbage bags to the nearest registered dumpsite indicated at https://talkas.lv/liela-talka/solo-talkas/.
The organizers encourage all volunteers to actively report their participation on social media, inspiring their fellow volunteers. The most widely used hashtags are #HandsOnLatvia, #TalkaCilts, #GreatTalka.
The Big Cleanup is organized in Latvia by the association Pedas LV in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate and Energy, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments, Latvijas Valsts Mezi (Latvian State Forests) and the Song Festival Society.
