Vimba deposed as Sigulda mayor
RIGA, Nov 13 (LETA) - Members of the Sigulda Municipal Council on Thursday voted to unseat Janis Vimba (Sigulda Municipality Party) as the municipality's mayor.
Twelve councilors who had proposed Vimba's removal, as well as his deputy Inga Stupele (New unity), voted to dismiss the Sigulda mayor. Five councilors voted against Vimba's removal and one abstained.
Stupele was appointed acting Sigula mayor until a new mayor is elected.
Liga Sausina (National Alliance), a member of the Sigula Municipal Council and principal of the Sigulda State Gymnasium, the proposal to replace Vimba was signed by seven members of the municipal council from the National Alliance, Latvian Association of Regions, and the joint list of the Vidzeme Party and the New Conservative Party.
Sausina told LETA that the main reason for the mayor's removal was residents' growing dissatisfaction with the local government's failure to implement planned projects, such as street repairs, the local government's general tardiness and negligence in communication with people.
Sausina told LETA that the motion of no confidence in Vimba and his dismissal from the post of the council chairman was a collegial decision.
Vimba previously told LETA that the no-confidence motion from the coalition partners came as a surprise to him. At the same time, he rejected the accusations made by the councilors.
Vimba was elected Sigulda mayor in July 2025 by 11 votes to eight and one abstention.
