Riga, March 20 (LETA) - Several lawmakers and medics will run in the municipal elections in Jelgava this year on the list of the New Unity, the political force informed LETA.

Sixteen candidates have registered for the elections in Jelgava. They are said to be experienced and competent professionals who are ready to work "to make the city administration fair, transparent and oriented towards the needs of the citizens". Their aim is to deliver practical solutions that will improve the city's environment and respond to citizens' interests.

"It is important to me that the work of the municipality is practical and brings real benefits to everyone in Jelgava. Support for families is particularly important - this includes affordable new housing, health promotion programs and access to kindergartens," said list's leader and councilor Aigars Rublis.

The list also includes Kaspars Vaivods, a surgeon at Jelgava Hospital, Elina Vilkārse, a family physician, Sandra Ozola, head of a pre-school education institution, Miks Vilnis, a musician and teacher, Andris Tomašuns, a councilor and historian.

The New Unity currently holds two seats on the city council. The political force is mostly in the opposition.

"The current leadership of the City Council is like an old clock - it is still ticking, but it no longer tells the right time. The management must be like a precise mechanism that works smoothly and meets today's needs," said the New Unity.
