PM Silina calls on political parties to "draw their conclusions" after elections in Daugavpils
RIGA, June 11 (LETA) - After the last municipal elections in Daugavpils, which Mayor Andrejs Elksnins' party Let's Go, Latgale! won by a landslide, other political parties should "draw their conclusions", Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) said in an interview to TV3 channel on Wednesday.
Silina said that voters' choice had to be respected. "Daugavpils is important to us," she stressed.
"In my opinion, other parties in Latvia should draw their conclusions..," she added. The prime minister said that everyone would like the state language to be used more often in Daugavpils and the city's mayor to use Latvian more often as well.
"So we all need to take these lessons into account and be able to tell the people of Daugavpils about them," Silina said, adding that it was clear that the Elksnins-led party will be a virtual monopoly in the Daugavpils City Council.
As reported, Let's Go, Latgale!, the party of incumbent Dauvapils Mayor Andrejs Elksnins won 14 out of 15 council seats in Daugavpils in this year's municipal elections, according to data published by the Central Election Commission.
For Latvia's Development received one seat on Daugavpils City Council.
Voter turnout in Daugavpils was moderate, at 42.4 percent.
