RIGA, Dec 23 (LETA) - Next year, during the second semester of the school year, some of the unvaccinated teachers might return to schools, said Inga Vanaga, the chairwoman of the Latvian Trade Union of the Education and Science Employees (LIZDA).

According to LIZDA, on November 15, 480 teachers were suspended or fired in general education schools and 237 teachers in preschools because they did not have the Covid-19 certificate, proving vaccination or recovery. Also, 221 technical employees of schools and 230 technical employees of preschools were suspended or fired because of that.

The data about Riga show that 235 teachers were suspended or fired, said Riga City Council general education school department head Anita Peterkopa.

She said that the suspension term is three months, therefore these teachers are not yet fired. According to the information at the disposal of the Riga City Council, some of the teachers got infected with Covid-19 and will have a certificate proving recovery, which will allow them to return to work.

As reported, the Latvian Association of Local Governments said earlier that schools in Latvia on November 18 needed 1,330 teachers. Also, there are vacancies for 529 technical employees.
