    Only Rezekne and Daugavpils support possible merger of adjacent municipalities in 2025

    RIGA, Oct 1 (LETA) - Of the five state cities, only Rezekne and Daugavpils support possible merger with adjacent municipalities in 2025, according to opinions gathered during the meeting of the Saeima committee on the administrative territorial reform today.

    The consultations held by the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry with lawmakers of Jelgava city, Jelgava municipality, Rezekne city and Rezekne municipality, Daugavpils city and Augsdaugava municipality, Liepaja city and Dienvidkurzeme municipality, Ventspils city and Ventspils municipality have been complete. The ministry proposed to merge the five cities with the adjacent municipalities.

    During the meetings, the ministry and local representatives discussed benefits from the mergers. Support to the mergers was voiced only by Rezekne and Daugavpils representatives, while representatives of other cities and municipalities called on officials not to rush the decisions.
