RIGA, Nov 8 (LETA) - A monument to the Soviet army in Rezekne is still standing a week before the deadline to remove it, and the date for its removal has not been publicly announced, Inara Groce, an opposition member of Rezekne City Council, told LETA. 

While talking to a group of select media representatives last week, Rezekne mayor Aleksandrs Bartasevics (Harmony) said that the agreement on the monument's removal has been concluded, adding that "unfortunately", the monument has to be dismantled because it is required by law, said Groce. 

Bartasevics also informed the journalists that the equipment necessary to document the dismantling process is available to him and that media presence is not necessary. 

As LETA reported, a law banning display of objects glorifying Soviet and Nazi regimes and requiring their removal came into effect in Latvia on June 23 after the Saeima passed it on June 16. According to the law, all objects glorifying totalitarian regimes in Latvia's territory have to be removed by November 15.
