RIGA, May 22 (LETA) - Educational institutions in Riga will be closed if a drone alert is in effect for Riga at 6 a.m., Girts Lapins (National Alliance), head of Riga City Council's Security and Corruption Prevention Committee, told a press conference on Friday.

If a drone alert is issued and remains in effect by 6 a.m., children will not be allowed to go to educational institutions. If a drone alert is issued during the day, children will be taken to a shelter until the emergency is over. Parents will not be allowed to pick up their children from schools and kindergartens while the drone alert is in effect.

Riga Vice Mayor Edvards Ratnieks (National Alliance) told reporters that the municipality had developed algorithms for civilian security in the case of a drone threat. Riga City Council will soon launch an awareness campaign to inform residents of how to act in emergency situations.

The algorithms have been borrowed from Ukraine, said Lapins. He also commented on the basic rules to be followed in case a drone alert is issued for Riga.

For example, it is important to follow the two-wall principle when seeking shelter, preferably windowless. People should also avoid large crowds and not hide under vehicles. Lapins also recommended Riga residents to discuss safety aspects with their children, telling them how to assess the safest places to shelter at home and in public.

As reported, Riga City Council plans to set up 146 emergency shelters in municipally-owned buildings in Riga, which will accommodate more than 50,000 people.
