Foreign Ministry expresses protest to Russia over drone incident in Latgale this morning
RIGA, May 7 (LETA) - Today, the Latvian Foreign Ministry summoned the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Russia to present a note of protest condemning the incident that occurred earlier this morning on the territory of the Republic of Latvia, when several unmanned aerial vehicles entered the municipalities of Rezekne, Balvi and Ludza from the airspace of the Russian Federation, LETA learned from the ministry.
The representative of the Russian Embassy was informed that Russia, by waging a war of aggression against Ukraine, is creating risks of security incidents across the wider region. During the conversation, Latvia emphasised that, contrary to Russia’s false public claims, it has never granted permission to use its airspace to launch drone attacks against targets in Russia, and that the drones had entered Latvian airspace from Russia.
Latvia also condemned Russia’s public threats of a possible large-scale attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on May 9, including threats against foreign embassies in Kyiv. It was emphasized that Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine constitutes a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, and the demand to end the aggression and withdraw Russian armed forces from the entirety of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory was reiterated.
