Number of newborns registered in Latvia drops by 14.2% in five months
RIGA, July 17 (LETA) - In the first five months of this year, 4,678 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 14.2 percent or 774 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2024, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.
In the first five months of 2025, 2,422 newborns were boys, 8.8 percent or 230 fewer than in the same period of 2024, and 2,256 were girls, a decrease of 19.4 percent or 544.
In May, 946 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 15.5 percent or 174 fewer than in the corresponding month of 2024, including 482 boys and 464 girls.
This was the seventh month in a row in which the number of newborns in Latvia was below 1,000.
In the first five months of this year, 11,096 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 5 percent or 584 fewer than in the first five months of 2024, when 11,680 deaths were registered.
Thus, in the first five months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 6,418, while in the same period of the previous year the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 6,228.
In the first five months of 2025, 3,005 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 26.9 percent or 637 more marriages than in the corresponding period of 2024.
On June 1 this year, the estimated population of Latvia was 1.832 million.
