Construction authority partially bans use of school building in Jekabpils
RIGA, Sept 18 (LETA) - The State Construction Control Bureau has partly prohibited the use of the building of the Jekabpils High School No.2, the construction authority informed LETA.
The bureau carried out an extraordinary inspection of the school building at 44 Jauna Street in Jekabpils, and found that a fire-proof plaster had detached from the ceiling and fallen down. This situation poses a real threat to the health and safety of the students and school staff.
Consequently, the State Construction Control Bureau has decided to prohibit the use of several rooms on the four floors of the building until the hazard has been eliminated.
The decision taken by the construction authority entered into force on September 16.
The State Construction Control Bureau calls on all parties concerned to take the necessary measures without delay to remove the identified hazards and ensure the safety of the students and teachers.
The State Construction Control Bureau will review the prohibition of the use of the premises once the premises are again safe for use by pupils and school staff.
In early September, foam boards and fire-resistant plaster detached and fell in the school's fourth-floor lobby.
The administration and council of the high school decided that students in grades 5-8 and 10 will study remotely until September 19 or until it is safe to use the school's new building. However, students in grades 1-4 and those who have to sit exams, namely in grades 9, 11 and 12, will study in person in safe classrooms.
