Water level in Daugava at Jekabpils increases by more than one meter

RIGA, Feb 18 (LETA) - Due to an ice jam in the Daugava near Jekabpils, the water level in the river has risen by 1.3 meters in the last two days, the Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center said Tuesday morning.

Early Tuesday morning, water level in the Daugava at Jekabpils was 4.2 meters above the norm. The water level would have to rise by another two meters for the situation to become dangerous.

The Plavinas reservoir is covered by ice while more ice floes are floating down the river and ice is jamming between Jekabpils and Zelki Bridge, as a result the water level at Jekabpils is rising.

Snow and ice will gradually melt at the end of February, and river levels will rise slightly.
