Education Ministry proposes resuming contact learning in regions where Covid-19 incidence is below 250
RIGA, Feb 9 (LETA) - The Education and Science Ministry has proposed to resume learning in classrooms in those municipalities where the cumulative 14-day number of Covid-19 cases is below 250 per 100,000 population.
The government is today assessing the ministry's proposal which is based on a regional approach to organizing education during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Health Ministry's information, Ventspils is currently the only large city where Covid-19 incidence is below 250. Other municipalities meeting the requirement include the regions of Alsunga, Dundaga, Ergli, Skrunda, Pavilosta, Malpils, Mazsalaca, Rucava, Mersrags, Aizpute, Koknese, Rujiena, Salacgriva, Naukseni, Sala, Kuldiga, Pargauja, Roja, Ventspils, Saulkrasti, Durbe, Zilupe and Krustpils.
To resume contact learning, schools would be required to ensure conditions for safe distancing and well-planned movement of people, the Education and Science Ministry's parliamentary secretary Reinis Znotins said on social networks.
According to the proposed regulation, schoolchildren will have to get to school by foot, family transport or school bus.
Education Minister Ilga Suplinska (New Conservative Party) has indicated that distance learning is seriously affecting the quality of education and that solutions are therefore being sought to resume learning in classrooms, at least partly.
