National Armed Forces stop search for second drone that crashed in Latgale

RIGA, May 7 (LETA) - The National Armed Forces (NBS) have stopped searching for the second drone that crashed in Latgale, but at the same time believe that the drone is still explosive, NBS informed LETA.

NBS continue to review data from all air surveillance sensors to assess possible locations of the drone. Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) told LETA this morning that the drone could have fallen in a remote and unpopulated location in Rezekne municipality. NBS did not comment on Thursday evening on which county and municipality the drone might have landed.

Despite the fact that the information available to NBS indicates that the drone has crashed, the aircraft is most likely explosive. In view of this, NBS strongly urge the public to immediately call 112 if they find it and to stay away from the site.

As reported, several unmanned aerial vehicles flew into Latvian airspace from Russia in the early hours of Thursday, at least one of which crashed in Rezekne, damaging an oil storage facility.

Two drones are currently known to have crashed.

At the request of the National Armed Forces, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) sent out a cell broadcast notification at 4.09 in Ludza, Balvi and at 4.43 in the Rezekne region. At around 8.30 a.m. the armed forces declared the end of the threat.

The National Armed Forces remind that while the Russian aggression in Ukraine is ongoing, there is a possibility of recurrence of cases of foreign UAVs entering or approaching Latvian airspace.
