RIGA, May 9 (LETA) - Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, 1,249 war refugees from Ukraine have received assistance in Latvia's southwestern city Liepaja and surrounding Dienvidkurzeme Region, LETA was told at the city's government.

A total of 996 Ukrainians have found refuge in Liepaja, and 74 Ukrainian students have enrolled at Liepaja's schools, while 46 kids from Ukraine are attending preschools in Liepaja. Last week. the city's social service disbursed EUR 31,524 in benefits to Ukrainian refugees. 

An information center for arrivals in Liepaja has provided nearly 300 consultations to Ukrainians. Three Ukrainians are receiving psychological counsel. Liepaja Municipal Police have been answering Ukrainians' inquiries concerning various matters and monitoring situation at their places of accommodation. 

The government of Liepaja city in cooperation with state authorities and NGOs has created a unified support system for Ukrainian war refugees, providing key contacts to make the refugees' communication with various institutions easier. 

Another 252 Ukrainians have settled in Dienvidkurzeme Region. Last week 112 of them received humanitarian assistance - clothes, hygiene goods, bedclothes, furniture, etc. - from the NGO Tabita's Heart.
