Opposition requires Riga City Council to repay public transport fees collected on May 4

RIGA, May 11 (LETA) - The opposition required the Riga City Council to repay public transport fees collected on May 4, Latvia's public holiday to celebrate restoration of independence, as the opposition believes that the decision on canceling free rides on that day should have been made by the Riga City Council and not executive director.

In line with the municipal regulations on discounts in municipal public transport, all passengers may use public transport free of charge on May 4, June 23-24, November 18, December 31, January 1, and the time of the Riga city festival.

The Riga temporary administration last year decided that in 2020, public transport will not be free of charge on any of these dates in order to prevent additional crowding in public transport during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, a similar decision about May 4 was made by Riga City acting executive director Elina Trautmane.

Former executive director Juris Radzevics (Honor to Serve Riga) believes that the executive director may not amend these regulations. Such a decision has caused serious harm to the public administration and residents.
