Several hundred gather for May 4 concert at Freedom Monument
RIGA, May 5 (LETA) - On Sunday evening, a few hundred people gathered at the Freedom Monument for a concert dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence.
Some people took shelter under umbrellas because it was raining outside. The weather was cloudy, with the occasional ray of sunshine breaking through.
The performances were accompanied by applause and cheers. Some of those in attendance carried Latvian flags and flowers in red, white and red colors.
Before the concert, the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers), and the Prime Minister, Evika Silina (New Unity), addressed the audience. Mierina pointed out that Latvia had fought its battle once, but this did not mean that the battle was over. "The spirit of imperialism has not disappeared and it is obvious how vulnerable freedom is," Mierina said.
Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia.
