RIGA, Oct 6 (LETA) - A patient who is thought to have obtained a fake vaccine certificate has died of Covid-19 at Vidzeme Hospital, ReTV channel reported Wednesday. 

According to the TV channel's sources, several persons with illegally obtained vaccination certificates are currently being treated for Covid-19 at Vidzeme Hospital. A police investigation has been started into the case. 

Representatives of Vidzeme Hospital said that medics grew suspicious after several allegedly vaccinated patients developed more severe forms of Covid-19 than they should. 

"One case was highly suspicious. I believe the State Police will deal with it," the hospital's board chairman Ugis Muskovs said. 

The head of Vidzeme Hospital said that there have been multiple suspicious cases and that  the hospital has provided all the necessary information to the police. The law enforcement authorities have started a criminal probe over counterfeiting of documents or using counterfeit documents, said State Police representative Simona Gravite. 

For the time being, there are no official suspects in the case, the police representative said, declining to reveal more details. 

ReTV reported, citing reliable sources, that the vaccine fraud might have been committed in a family physician's practice in Valmiera, which had drawn law enforcement authorities' attention already earlier. 

Dace Zavadska, chairperson the State Council of Immunization, noted that those who have obtained fake Covid-19 certificates will not be able to hide the truth because medics can determine whether an infected person has or has not been vaccinated.
