Air alert in eastern Latvia called off - NAF
RIGA, May 7 (LETA) - The air alert in the municipalities of Balvi, Ludza and Rezekne was called off on Thursday morning, according to a announcement on the 112.lv emergencies website.
"The National Armed Forces (NAF) inform that the airspace threat has ended and additional information will follow on the NAF's social network accounts "Latvijas armija"," the statement reads.
As LETA reported, several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, flew into Latvian airspace from Russia in the early hours of Thursday, and at least one of them crashed in Rezekne, damaging an oil storage facility.
At the request of the NAF, the State Fire and Rescue Service sent out a cell broadcast about a possible threat in airspace to residents of the municipalities of Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne.
The NAF, together with NATO allies, constantly monitors Latvian airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to a potential threat. The army has reinforced its air defense capabilities on Latvia's eastern border by deploying additional units.
The NAF notes that while Russian aggression in Ukraine is ongoing, there is a risk of recurrence of incidents of foreign drones entering or approaching Latvian airspace.
