Jelgava suspends cooperation with Russian, Belarus cities

RIGA, April 1 (LETA) - Lawmakers of Jelgava state city, condemning Russia's military aggression and attack on Ukraine, condemning Belarus for supporting these attacks, decided to suspend cooperation signed with the cities of Magadan in Russia and Baranovichi in Belarus.

Lawmakers signed a joint statement, voicing support to Ukraine's fight for independence, and readiness to continue providing assistance to Jelgava's sister city Ivano-Frankivsk and other Ukrainian residents.

On March 25, all lawmakers, except one - Andrejs Pagors from Latvia's Union of Russians (LKS), supported the declaration of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of March 22 on the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine.

The Congress calls on the Russian Federation to cease its war in Ukraine, withdraw its troops, ensure humanitarian corridors, and stop human rights violations. The Congress expresses its unwavering commitment to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

Jelgava noted that the city so far has registered 477 refugees from Ukraine, including 174 children.
