Stepping on Daugava ice in Riga to be banned for safety reasons
Riga, Feb 6 (LETA) - The Riga City Council's committee on security, public order and corruption prevention on Friday instructed Executive Director Janis Lange to impose a ban on people walking on the Daugava ice for safety reasons.
The Riga Municipal Police (RMP) has already prepared a plan to control reckless people trying to cross the river on ice.
All committee members voted in favor of the decision.
The committee meeting was convened following media reports on the situation on the Daugava ice.
In the center of Riga, the ban on stepping on the ice of the Daugava was lifted earlier, but it is forbidden to step on the ice within 50 meters of bridges and overpasses.
Police have warned that in the city center, the ice on the Daugava is fragile and dangerous under bridges.
The fine for violating this prohibition is up to EUR 100.
