President expects solution on Gors concert hall in line with objectives of Latvia's cultural policy objectives
RIGA, Jan 27 (LETA) - The state must find a management model that will ensure future operations of Gors concert hall in line with Latvia's cultural policy objectives, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics said at a meeting with members of Saeima's Latgale Region Subcommittee and representatives of the Smart Administration and Regional Development Ministry on Tuesday.
During the meeting, implementation of the Action Plan for Economic Growth of Latvia's Eastern Border Regions in 2025 was discussed, as well as the current situation regarding anti-mobility measures along Latvia's eastern border, accessibility of education and healthcare services, and regional transport in Latgale, the president's advisor Martins Dregeris told LETA.
Members of Saeima's Latgale Region Subcommittee also informed Rinkevics about the perspectives of future development of Latgale concert hall Gors.
Rinkevics once again emphasized that Gors was a cultural center of regional and national importance. "No one wants to take away concert hall Gors, but to preserve it as a center of Latvian and Latgalian identity at the national level. Therefore the state has to find a management model that will ensure future operations of the concert hall in accordance with the goals of national cultural policy," he said.
The Culture Ministry has offered Rezekne City Council that the state could acquire decisive influence over Gors by covering the cost of 75 percent of the concert hall's share capital.
Rezekne municipality has not yet responded to the offer, instead requesting further information.
As reported, Rezekne City Council earlier said that it was considering changes to Latgale embassy Gors management system. The local government emphasizes that it provides Gors a subsidy from the Rezekne budget every year, expecting in return high quality and the concert hall's work aimed at increasing its revenues so that the subsidy could be reduced. A recent audit of the concert hall's functions, however, identified several problems in its operations.
In light of audit results and recommendations, the municipality, in cooperation with Rezekne Culture and Tourism Center, has started to work on possible changes "that would ensure sustainability of the institution and reduce its dependence on the municipality's subsidy".
One of the main tasks is to identify a management system that will allow Gors to become more efficient, transparent, and significantly increase revenues from its operations.
Earlier this month, Diana Zirnina was dismissed as the manager of Gors on the grounds of loss of trust.
