Large Covid-19 incidence in Daugavpils explained with large number of tests and city being on transit crossroads
RIGA, Jan 8 (LETA) - The large Covid-19 incidence in Daugavpils is related with a number of factors, including the large number of Covid-19 tests and the city being on the transit crossroads, said the city's vice mayor Livija Jankovska (Our Party) who is in charge of the health sector.
The politician said that the city council starts every morning with collection of data, working together with the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Recently there have not been any large outbreaks in the city, and the situation in the social care home where there were problems in early December, has now normalized.
According to Jankovska, Covid-19 spread in education institutions has declined. The local government is now working with ensuring public transport services in the city because many drivers have caught Covid-19 or other seasonal illnesses.
"We should understand that all transit transport from Russia, Lithuania and Belarus is going through the city. As restriction were introduced in Latvia, our residents went to shop to Lithuania, while Lithuanians came here," said Jankovska, naming this as another possible reason for high Covid-19 incidence.
As reported, 124 new Covid-19 cases were registered in Daugavpils on Wednesday, bringing the total number of 14-day cumulative cases to 958.
