Inconclusive outcome of local elections in Jekabpils Region results in fragmented council
RIGA, June 6 (LETA) - An inconclusive outcome of local elections in Jekabpils Region has resulted in a highly fragmented regional council, comprising political parties and alliances, the Central Election Commission's data shows.
With 21.01 percent of votes For Development of Latvia emerged as the winner of Saturday's polls. The Green Party was runner-up with 17.63 percent.
Association Residents followed with 10.02 percent, the New Conservative Party with 9.23 percent, Jekabpils Regional Party with 8.31 percent and the National Alliance with 8.03 percent.
The joint ticket of Latvian Association of Regions and Unity also won representation on Jekabpils Region Council with 6.99 percent voter support and the Latvian Farmers' Union won 6.66 percent of votes. Harmony received 6.3 percent of votes in the elections.
All these parties have been elected to Jekabpils Region Council.
As reported, 327,938 voters or 34.01 percent of eligible voters cast their votes in this year's local government elections, according to the Central Election Commission's data.
This is the lowest voter turnout since the restoration of independence.
