Two of Latvia's five largest cities saw population growth in the first half of the year, three - population decline
RIGA, Feb 8 (LETA) - Despite the fact that the total population of Latvia has decreased by 0.5 percent over the last six months, in two of Latvia's five largest cities the number of residents has increased slightly, according to information provided by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP).
On July 1 last year, the Register of Natural Persons maintained by the PMLP showed 1,998,181 inhabitants, and on January 1 this year - 1,988,792.
Meanwhile, the population of Riga has decreased from 661,695 on July 1 last year to 659,416 at the beginning of this year. The population of Daugavpils decreased from 85,147 to 84,609, and that of Liepaja from 72,342 to 71,789.
The total population of Jurmala, on the other hand, increased from 60,070 to 60,329 between July 1 last year and January 1 this year, and in Jelgava from 59,313 to 59,441.
