The Administrative Territorial Reform takes effect
RIGA, July 1 (LETA) - Today, the Administrative Territorial Reform takes effect, which is the second administrative reform after restoration of Latvia's independence.
The reform provides that the current 119 municipalities are putting down their mandates, and the new 43 municipalities start work. The new municipalities have been formed by merging several former regions.
Representatives of several municipalities were not satisfied with the reform and filed complaints with the Constitutional court. Most of the claims were rejected, except for the decision on the merger of Varaklani region with Rezekne region, Ilukste region with Augsdaugava region and Ozolnieki region with Jelgava region.
Local elections still should be held in Varaklani region and Rezekne region, until then, temporary administrations have been appointed in both municipalities.
The Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry today will hold an online press conference to inform about the reform.
